Cheney Shooting Leaves Many Questions Unanswered.

OK, I haven't posted on it yet but everyone knows by now that Cheney shot someone. There is a lot of speculation floating around as to why they didn't alert the media about it until the next day.

Reporters Press McClellan on Delay in Reporting Cheney Shooting Incident

E&P: Reporters at White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's Monday morning press "gaggle" peppered him with questions about the 18-hour delay in any word emerging on Vice President Cheney's shooting incident in Texas on Saturday. (...)

McClellan also said Monday, according to The Associated Press, that "Bush and senior aides were told Saturday night by the staff of the White House Situation Room that somebody in the Cheney's hunting party was shot, but he said he was not told until Sunday morning that Cheney was the shooter. He said he contacted the vice president's office and everyone agreed they needed to get the information to the public quickly." (...)

The New York Times observed Monday that reporters "seemed frustrated that Mr. McClellan could not tell them exactly when Mr. Bush learned that the vice president himself had shot Mr. Whittington."

Reviewing the late-morning press briefing today, the National Journal's Hotline site said that reporters reacted with "astonishment" to McClellan's admission about not knowing about Cheney's role in the shooting until Sunday. It noted that McClellan did everything possible to imply that the responsibility for any bungling resides in the vice president's office.

McClellan also said he did not know about a report that the Secret Service prevented a deputy sheriff from interviewing Cheney.
(emphasis mine)
Secret service what? WTF??!!??

CBS News White House correspondent Peter Maer reported Monday that Texas authorities are complaining that the Secret Service barred them from speaking to Cheney after the incident. "Kenedy County Texas Sheriffs Lt. Juan Guzman said deputies first learned of the shooting when an ambulance was called," Maer said. The Secret Service is looking into how the case was handled at the scene, Maer added....(more)

Slate asks: Does Dick Cheney Know How To Hunt?
What the veep needs to learn about shooting quail.

OK, I have a few questions of my own.

Did Cheney really shoot him at 5:30 or did he illegally hunt after dark?? **
Mr. Cheney, 65, was out with friends at a private ranch in Kenedy County late on Saturday afternoon when he accidentally sprayed an elderly companion with shotgun pellets at about 5:30 p.m. (...)
Mr. Whittington, a wealthy Republican and donor to the presidential campaigns of George W. Bush, was taken to hospital at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Because, if Cheney shot him at 5:30, why did it take 2:45 minutes to get to a hospital?? Especially if this is true...

[UPDATE] E&P: Late Tuesday, the Secret Service related that the shooting actually took place at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, 20 minutes later than previously stated--and therefore approaching the 6:18 sunset. WTF?? So it was 2:25 minutes? Why the discrepency?
"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been. The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."
Something just doesn't make sense here. 2:45 2:25 minutes to get to the hospital when there was an ambulance right there on call at the time?? Plus, he was transported to the hospital by helicopter. Either the reported time of his shooting or arrival are wrong, (Plus, per the update, they already have been altering the time) they tried treating the guy on the scene for a gunshot wound to the face and neck for some time, or we are being lied to. May I call bullshit now?

**Texas Parks and wildlife: Artificial light of any form that casts or reflects a beam of light onto or otherwise illuminates a game animal or bird may not be used as an aid to hunt, except that battery-powered scoping devices that project a light or dot only inside the scope and pin sight lights on archery equipment are legal devices...
Also, did Mrs Cheney and Mrs Whittington know their husbands were hunting quail with two peices of tail and not just a bunch of good ole boys? Was it really just a hunting trip? Because it looks more like a double date than a hunting party to me.

Known hunting party so far (LtoR): Pamela Willeford, Dick, Katharine Armstrong, and shooting victim Harry Whittington.

Pardon me, but cheating and hunting are long standing southern traditions that go together. At least it sure seems that way to me as most of the hunters I know personally know exactly what I'm talking about. It's hard to find a different hobby that provides as good a cover than hunting and fishing.

If my hunch is right, that might explain why the story was so slow to find its way to the media. That would also help me understand why Cheney high-tailed it back to DC instead of hanging around until the next day to make sure the guy he shot, who was in an intensive care unit, was going to be allright. Did Mr Cheney have some explaining to Mrs Cheney to do?

I did some further digging...

This is a bit weak I know, but could there be a history of covering up women on Cheney hunting trips?

Scalia Was Cheney Hunt Trip Guest; Ethics Concern Grows

Perry said Cheney was among the first to deplane, followed by Scalia and a young woman who was identified to Perry as one of the justice's daughters.

Both Perry and Naquin said there were orders prohibiting photographs of those who exited the planes and climbed into the motorcade.
Was this really Scalia's daughter, and if so, why prohibit photos?

Hey, I'm just asking
